CIRANO is a private non-profit organization incorporated under the Québec Companies Act. Its infrastructure and research activities are funded through fees paid by member organizations, an infrastructure grant from the Ministère du Développement économique et régional et de la Recherche, and grants and research mandates obtained by its research teams. This paper presents research carried out at CIRANO and aims at encouraging discussion and comment. The observations and viewpoints expressed are the sole responsibility of the authors. Mots clés : expérience, jeu de « money burning », effets de framing, préférences anti-sociales We study antisocial preferences in simple money-burning …

A New Clustering Technic by the Preferences of the Objective in Data Envelopment Analysis

The ways of placing decision making units (DMUs) in certain clusters are found as a subject in statistics, these ways usually are heuristic. The proposed clustering approach in this article considers preferences of DMUs. This study applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) DMUs are clustered by solving multi-objective linear problem (MOLP) and by considering preferences of each DMU at production ...

Reference-Dependent Preferences: Evidence from Marathon Runners

Theories of reference-dependent preferences propose that individuals evaluate outcomes as gains or losses relative to a neutral reference point. We test for reference dependence in a large dataset of marathon finishing times (n = 9, 789, 093). Models of reference-dependent preferences such as prospect theory predict bunching of finishing times at reference points. We provide visual and statisti...

Reference Point Effects in Riskless Choice Without Loss Aversion

Numerous studies have demonstrated that preferences among options in riskless choice are often influenced by reference points. That is, an existing reference level or status quo can bias preferences toward new alternatives. Reference-dependent effects have typically been attributed to loss aversion (Tversky & Kahneman, 1991). The key idea is that when an option is being considered, an individua...

Individual differences in bitter taste preferences are associated with antisocial personality traits.

In two studies, we investigated how bitter taste preferences might be associated with antisocial personality traits. Two US American community samples (total N = 953; mean age = 35.65 years; 48% females) self-reported their taste preferences using two complementary preference measures and answered a number of personality questionnaires assessing Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, everyd...

Reference-dependent preferences for maternity wards: an exploration of two reference points

It is now well established that a person's valuation of the benefit from an outcome of a decision is determined by the intrinsic "consumption utility" of the outcome itself and also by the relation of the outcome to some reference point. The most notable expression of such reference-dependent preferences is loss aversion. What precisely this reference point is, however, is less clear. This pape...

Context effects: A representation of choices from categories

This paper axiomatizes a utility representation for reference-dependent preferences over menus of lotteries. Most papers in the relevant literature use as the reference point some status quo element and characterize the complete set of preferences by using various assumptions on how the conditional preferences depend on this reference point. In our paper, we will analyze instead the case in whi...
